The project:

The CLEVER Cities project aims to promote a replicable scheme of sustainable and socially inclusive urban regeneration in eight European and one South American city. To define the regeneration of urban spaces is the role of naturalistic elements, the so-called "Nature-Based Solutions”, which become the tool of regeneration itself, bringing benefits not only on an environmental level, but also on a social, cultural and economic level.

Context:

More than a quarter of the population of the European Union lives in cities, spaces often devoid of green areas and nature. In addition to having an impact on the quality of life of people who live in cities, the lack of green areas is obviously also an environmental problem.

Performed activities:

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are solutions that involve the use of natural elements, such as plants, trees and green spaces to address socio-environmental problems, even in urban contexts.
CLEVER Cities wants to adopt NBS as a means to improve public health, social cohesion, citizen safety and create economic opportunities.

The main objectives of CLEVER Cities are:

  • Develop an innovative co-creation and implementation approach to promote sustainable and socially inclusive urban regeneration;
  • Insert Nature-based solutions as a tool in urban planning processes;
  • Activate laboratories within which to create Nature-based solutions thanks to a co-creation process;
  • Monitor the results of the actions carried out with a view to evaluating the results and the replicability of the intervention.

In Milan, the working group made up of Ambiente Italia, the Municipality of Milan, AMAT, RFI, the Polytechnic Foundation, WWF Research and Projects, Cooperativa Eliante, will work on the design and construction of noise barriers through the insertion of naturalistic elements and the implementation green infrastructure at the new Tibaldi station; the creation of green roofs through the involvement of the network of local stakeholders (condominium administrators and home owners and tenants, green roof experts and specialized companies), the provision of dedicated incentives and a widespread information campaign; the innovative and participatory management of the green areas and the integration of experimental elements capable of mitigating the noise towards the railway line on a green area in via Giambellino.
