What is a Life Cycle Assessment?
Il Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a tool for assessing the environmental impact of a product or service at the level of its entire life cycle. The life cycle of a product includes all phases of its existence, from the extraction of raw materials to production, use, transport, disposal and end of life.
LCA is often used for compare alternative products or services based on environmental criteria. It is also used to develop company-wide or supply chain-level sustainability strategies, and to meet environmental reporting obligations. This analysis is based on a standardized methodology and a set of principles and guidelines, such as those established by the ISO 14040 and by ISO 14044.
